Water Leaking Into the Basement? Do These Things Immediately

A leaking basement can be more than just a nuisance—it’s a serious issue that could compromise your home’s structural integrity, cause mold growth, and damage your possessions. Whether you notice a small puddle or significant water intrusion, here’s what to do immediately if water is leaking into your basement.

Identify the Source of the Leak

First, determine whether the water is coming from an internal source like plumbing or an external one such as rainwater or groundwater seepage. Check walls, floors, windows, and pipes for signs of where the leak is originating. This will help you decide on the next step for repairs.

Remove Water and Protect Belongings

Use a wet/dry vacuum or pump to remove standing water. If the area is carpeted, peel the carpet back to allow drying underneath. Move furniture and boxes away from the affected area to prevent additional damage and mold contamination.

Dry Out the Area

Set up fans and a dehumidifier to speed up the drying process. The quicker you dry the space, the lower the chances of mold and mildew forming. Keep the basement well-ventilated and monitor humidity levels closely.

Check Your Gutters and Downspouts

One of the most common causes of basement leaks is poor drainage. Clogged gutters or improperly directed downspouts can cause water to pool around your home’s foundation and eventually seep into the basement. Make sure gutters are clear, and downspouts extend at least 6 feet from the foundation.

Inspect the Grading Around Your Home

The soil around your house should slope away from the foundation. If it slopes toward the home, rainwater may be directed into your basement. Regrading or adding compacted soil can help protect against future leaks.
